They didn’t speak a whole lot over the next hour. Most of that time Zero and Root spent sitting in the cafeteria across the table from one another.

Flea sat close to them, even though it was obvious neither of them wanted him there. But that sort of thing never mattered to him before—except since they’d all graduated from school. Now Flea didn’t have his gang shadowing behind to keep him company. But the habits of bullies apparently died hard: every few minutes he would repeat his question about where Lefty was, and every time he did they ignored him. The first few times he asked, they would both look at him for a moment before turning away, but after a while they pretended he wasn’t there altogether.

Zero felt pretty certain that Flea had been really hurting for attention and interaction while he was recovering at the Elite hospital. Zero had never been to one of those, but if it was run by Elite, then it would be easy to assume they weren’t the friendliest people. They probably left him bored and alone most of the time.

When Zero looked up at the clock and saw that an hour had passed since they had left Captain’s dorm room, he stood up from the table. “Do you think we’ll get any sleep tonight?”

“I doubt it,” Root said as he walked toward the door. “I won’t be done talking until we’re both on the same page, and that’s not going to happen until he sees things my way. There’s no way I’m budging on this.”

As they stepped through the cafeteria doors and looked down the street at the building that housed Captain’s dorm room, they saw three vehicles slowing to a stop. There was no mistaking who the cars belonged to. They looked exactly the same as the ones that had once come to haul Lefty off to Exile City.

Root stretched his arm out to the side and stopped Zero. “The Elite security team is here.”

“David must have turned on us. We better run,” Zero said.

“What did you guys do?” Flea was beginning to laugh behind them.

“We have to make it through the fence,” Zero said. “It’s going to be the only way out.”

Root took off at full speed. “We’re as good as dead if we go into that jungle in the dark.”

Zero sped up and jumped a few steps ahead to lead the way. “Do you really think the Elite will treat us any better if we let them take us?”

It took them only about five minutes of running through the banana orchard before they reached the spot along the fence that Zero knew so well—the same spot where Lefty had created a hole in the wires.

Zero grabbed hold of the wires and began twisting them open. Halfway through reopening the hole, they heard a familiar low growl that could only come from the throat of a jungle cat. Zero squinted his eyes and saw the silhouette of a cat moving smoothly through the tall grass toward them.
